MARKETING DIRECTOR
The role of the Marketing Director is a crucial one for the well-being and continued success of the College Light Opera Company. It is not primarily a promotional position, however. Much of the work is repetitive on a weekly basis. Perhaps 25% of the job is spent on creative publicity and public relations technique while the remainder is spent on tried and proven ways of writing press releases, placing media advertising, running posters, and coordinating the printing of the weekly program.
The Marketing Director functions in four areas with CLOC: media writing and advertising placement; weekly production of the theatre programs and posters and distribution of the latter; maintenance of the display bulletin boards at the theatre; public relations work at the theatre before performances; and operation of the snack bar at performances. He or she also performs a variety of related work from time to time on a non-repetitive basis.
This work requires excellence in written communications skills, an ability to respond in a timely manner to many deadlines each week, and the creativity or showmanship involved in selling a product.
CLOC currently operates at about 90% capacity. The job of the Marketing Director then is to keep our name in front of our current audience in an attractive and appealing manner and to develop ways to fill the final 10% of the seats. Since CLOC loses about $75,000 annually, it is also the function of the marketing office to aid in annual fund appeals.
The ideal candidate is usually a junior or senior in college with a background in newspaper writing and theatre promotion. The applicant must have an automobile available for the season. CLOC pays for gasoline used during the season. He or she must have working knowledge of word processing, preferably NewWord and Apple Word. The position pays room and board and a stipend. Please call the number below or e-mail Bob.Haslun@Oberlin.edu for the amount of the stipend. Employment dates for 2003 are June 3 - August 23.
